Call to Action
PLEASE Attend the next Town Meeting on Monday, November 10 at the High School. A citizen's petition has put an item on the warrant to rename Indigenous People's Day to columbus day.
We are asking everyone who can to pledge to attend Town Meeting, and stop this reversal of the will of Medway residents.
Whether or not you can attend, please discuss this with your Medway friends and neighbors, and encourage them to go to Town Meeting and vote against columbus day.
Town Meeting makes large decisions with a relatively small number of people. Your presence could make the difference and preserve our Indigenous People’s Day.
The holiday was renamed to Indigenous People's Day for the town of Medway when an article passed 144 to 88 (i.e. overwhelming) at the May 8, 2023 Town Meeting. It took allies about 3 years to get this changed. You can read about the efforts on MedwayMarches.com.
Note: At the last town meeting, checkin was slow, and many people were asked to show an id because their recent census was missing. Consider arriving early and bringing an id.
2025 Warrant Article
The citizens of Medway petition the government of the town of Medway to return the name Columbus Day to the holiday that falls on the second Monday of October, now known as Indigenous People's Day.
Indigenous People's Day
In 2023, the town voted to change columbus day to Indigenous People’s Day. The reasons are two fold. First, Columbus did not deserve to be honored, and second, Indigenous People should be honored.
Medway has had some meaningful improvements in recent years, including creating a committee for Indigenous people’s Day, creating the IDEA committee, and renaming of the board of selectmen to Select Board. These steps forward show respect for all residents of our town.
More info on Columbus
Columbus does not deserve our respect because of his brutal treatment of indigenous peoples, his role in the transatlantic slave trace and the devastating consequences of his voyages on native populations.
MedwayMarches.com has more information about why we should not be honoring Columbus. There are two videos of the School Committee that has some very impactful dialogue.
